Atlanta Hyperbaric and Wound Care Clinic

Glenn L. Goodhart, M.D., J.D.

Owner and Clinic Director

Dr. Goodhart’s medical background starts in 1976 when he became Board certified in Infectious Diseases.  At that time he was a professor at the Medical College of Pennsylvania.  He moved to Atlanta in 1978 to work for the CDC and then went into private practice.  Specializing in his field of Infectious Diseases, he became keenly aware of the large numbers of persons suffering with non-healing wounds.  Some of his patients were diabetic and some were trauma victims. It did not take long to realize that better wound management, care, and methods were needed for these individuals if they were going to lead more normal lives. He was exposed to numerous situations in which amputations were the only answer, and he was determined to do something about it.

His focus soon became chronic wound care.  After two years of concentrated effort, in 1987 he started the first physician-run Hyperbaric Oxygen Clinic in Georgia in what was then known as Georgia Baptist Medical Center.  Three Sechrist monoplace chambers were installed. The purpose was to help heal chronic wounds using “HBO” as an adjunct to antibiotic and standard wound protocols.  The rest of the story is a growing history-in-the-making that continues today.

In 1992, Dr. Goodhart opened his own privately run Hyperbaric Oxygen Clinic on the campus of DeKalb Medical Center in Decatur, Georgia.  Patients now come from all over the country to seek his care.  In 1999, he began using HBO therapy for brain injuries, which includes patients with Cerebral Palsy, Stroke, or related hypoxic events that leave brain cells weakened and injured.  Patients are all ages—from babies to adults. The results are more than promising. The therapy has proven both safe and effective.  Hundreds of patients have now been treated with this modality and have shown strong improvement. A new quality of life has been experienced when all else has failed. Families who had lost all hope have seen their loved ones begin to recover.

HBO therapy is now approved for Cerebral Palsy in the state of Texas, with insurance companies now reimbursing for this care. As Dr. Goodhart and his colleagues continue to use and document the effectiveness of Hyperbaric Oxygen, more states will make it a reimbursed treatment for a variety of brain injuries.   HBO therapy is growing everyday in its popularity among physicians and health care providers.  Because of the efforts of Dr. Goodhart and his colleagues, it is becoming one of the most respected and widely used therapies that medicine has to offer.
